The Index Ventures Mafia
Index Ventures didn’t start in Silicon Valley. It started in Geneva, with a bond trader who saw what others missed.
In 1976, Gerry Rimer founded Index Securities, a brokerage firm that became a major player in the Swiss bond market. Two decades later, he brought in his sons, Neil and David, and partnered with entrepreneur Giuseppe Zocco to take a bold new step. In 1996, they launched Index Ventures with a clear mission: to back ambitious European startups that were being overlooked while all eyes were on Silicon Valley.
What began as a spinoff from the family’s bond-trading business quickly evolved into one of the world’s most respected venture capital firms. From its dual headquarters in London and San Francisco, and offices in Geneva and New York, Index Ventures invests from seed to scale, supporting founders who are challenging the status quo.
Its track record includes early bets on category-defining companies like Skype, Revolut, Figma and Robinhood.
But Index’s influence goes beyond its portfolio. It’s known for building a collaborative, founder-first culture that has become a launchpad for new generations of innovators. Former team members have gone on to create standout ventures like Eventbrite, Seedcamp, Pigment, Volter, Maven Clinic, Nous, and many others.

The Index Ventures Mafia has founded 65 companies and raised $2B.
