Alibaba Group, founded by Jack Ma and a group of 17 friends and students in 1999, is a Chinese multinational conglomerate specializing in e-commerce, retail, internet, and technology. Starting from a humble beginning in Jack Ma's Hangzhou apartment, the company launched Alibaba.com, a business-to-business marketplace connecting Chinese manufacturers with overseas buyers.
In 2003, Alibaba expanded into consumer-to-consumer (C2C) services with Taobao, which rapidly became one of China's most popular online shopping websites. Taobao's success was followed by the creation of Alipay, a digital payment platform, in 2004, to facilitate transactions in a market where consumers had limited trust in online shopping.
Over the years, Alibaba continued to diversify its services into cloud computing (Alibaba Cloud), digital media, and entertainment sectors. The company's growth trajectory took a significant leap in 2014 with its initial public offering (IPO).
